Japanese Koto – The History, The Sound & The Music @ Wintergreen Summer Music Festival

Yoko Reikano Kimura, Koto Soloist for the weekend’s MountainTop Masterworks concerts, will introduce the sound, history, and repertoire of this fascinating instrument.  Often referred to as a Japanese dulcimer, this instrument evokes the cultural and musical heritage of Japan, and is a surprisingly exciting partner to a full symphony orchestra.

Duo YUMENO will perform their commission piece, Daron Hagen’s “Appassionato” at The Emigrants concert. The Queens Museum presents the world premiere of a new documentary chamber music work, The Emigrants by composer George Tsz-Kwan Lam. The Emigrants will be premiered by the ensemble New Morse Code (Hannah Collins, cello and Michael Compitello, percussion). Duo YUMENO and Raphael Leal (percussionist), who are featured on the recorded interviews that are part of The Emigrants, will be also joining this concert. Admission is free, and this event is open to the public.

Duo YUMENO Tenth Anniversary Recital @ Weil Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall

Duo YUMENO – koto/shamisen player Yoko Reikano Kimura and cellist Hikaru Tamaki – will celebrate its tenth anniversary in a concert featuring the world premiere performance of a commissioned work by the prominent Japanese composer, Toshi Ichiyanagi. The concert will also feature works by Daron Hagen and Marty Regan that seamlessly blend Eastern and Western traditions. Japanese shamisen player, Shōho Mutoh will join Kimura in a virtuosic, improvisational rendition of the classic Japanese masterwork, Shin-sarashi.

IMJS celebrate the cultures of Heian and Heisei Eras with a concert presenting music Lady Murasaki describes in her 11th-century novel The Tale of Genji, (in collaboration with the current exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art) and the 2019 Sung Waka Poetry by the Retiring Emperor and Empress of this Heisei Era from their January New Year Poetry Celebration. This concert is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
